基督曾吩咐祂的第一批门徒要彼此相爱，象祂爱他们一样。这样，他们才能向世人证明有基督在他们心里“成了荣耀的盼望”。祂说：“我赐给你们一条新命令，乃是叫你们彼此相爱；我怎样爱你们，你们也要怎样相爱”（约13:34）。当救主讲说这句话的时候，门徒还不能领会其中的意义；但及至他们看到基督受苦，被钉，复活，升天，而又在五旬节圣灵降在他们身上之后，他们对于上帝的爱，才有了更清楚的认识，并且认识到弟兄之间所必须保持的仁爱。……[2]

Christ had bidden the first disciples love one another as He had loved them. Thus they were to bear testimony to the world that Christ was formed within, the hope of glory. “A new commandment I give unto you,” He had said, “That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” At the time when these words were spoken, the disciples could not understand them; but after they had witnessed the sufferings of Christ, after His crucifixion and resurrection, and ascension to heaven, and after the Holy Spirit had rested on them at Pentecost, they had a clearer conception of the love of God, and of the nature of that love which they must have for one another....?{RRe 154.2}[2]

In their daily association with one another, they revealed the love that Christ had enjoined upon them.
